Brief: Develop a mid-sized bag that can carry an iPad and essential items for an active, on-the-go individual. The design should draw inspiration from well-known outdoor brands for materials and functional features, while the form should respond to a range of everyday activities, including attending classes, shopping at markets, and spontaneous hikes. The goal is to create a versatile, practical, and thoughtfully considered bag that balances functionality, comfort, and style.

Before beginning form ideation, a comprehensive list of “want-to-have” features was created for different sections of the bag. The list was then refined to a smaller set of compatible elements, with seven key features (outlined in black) selected for development. These features served as guiding points for both ideation and design decisions throughout the process.

Early ideation explored ways to adjust the bag’s size through folding mechanisms, but this feature was ultimately set aside based on the bag’s intended use. The final form adopts an asymmetric silhouette, reducing overall width while subtly increasing height to accommodate an iPad at an angle. The angled zipper complements the dynamic lines found throughout the design, reinforcing a sense of motion and balance. In several sketches, an iPad is shown in blue to communicate scale and proportion, with the finalized form presented in the upper right corner.

An essential part of this project involved learning to sew and prototype. Homemade patterns were cut and stitched using a sewing machine, focusing on establishing accurate scale and intuitive pocket placement. Key takeaways included emphasizing angular details, allowing extra room for seams, and reinforcing attachment points to ensure long-term durability.

The bag’s size falls between a 2L crossbody and a full-sized messenger, making it ideal for carrying everyday essentials. Color and material breaks are strategically used throughout the design to highlight key interaction points and enhance usability. A secondary fabric panel is tethered to the bottom to provide added support when the bag is full and doubles as a convenient spot to secure a jacket. Multiple attachment points along the sides offer versatility for clipping keys, ID cards, or other quick-access items.

Multiple colorways are tailored for the outdoor enthusiast, featuring muted earth tones that blend naturally with rugged environments, along with a sleek black option for a more understated, everyday look.

Technical drawings illustrate how the iPad fits within the bag. The top view highlights the organization of various compartments, including two zippered sections, an exterior pocket, and an iPad sleeve. A drawstring closure at the top allows for quick access and accommodates larger items, such as a water bottle, while maintaining a secure fit. An adjustable protective sleeve runs along the bottom of the bag, acting as a sacrificial layer when placing the bag on the ground and providing extra reinforcement for carrying heavier items. This sleeve also secures larger objects, like a jacket, freeing the user’s hands.

Material choices were guided by the bag’s intended uses and design inspirations. For quick trips, lightweight materials that don’t impede movement were prioritized. Ripstop nylon was selected for its durability, light weight, water resistance, and cost-effectiveness. Reinforced nylon webbing provides strength and support for heavier loads, while micro cord is used for zipper pulls and securing the reinforcement panel.
