Before ideating on form, multiple “want to have” features were listed for various parts of the bag. The list was refined to a smaller selection and then 7 specifics, outlined in black, were chosen, seeing that they worked well together. This helped to guide ideation and decision making.
Early ideation focused on changing the size of the bag through folds, but ultimately the bag’s use determined this wasn’t an important feature. The bag’s form is asymmetric to minimize the width of the bag by subtly increasing the height to fit an iPad at an angle. Additionally, The Zipper is at an angle to play into the dynamic lines found throughout the bag. In some of the sketches An iPad is shown in blue for scale and proportions. The final form is shown in the upper right corner.

An essential part of this project was learning to sew and prototype. Homemade patterns were cut and sewed, using a sewing machine. The prototype focused on scale and aided in determining intuitive positioning for pockets.  Key takeaways include exaggerating the angles, adding room for seams, and reinforcing the attachment points to ensure durability.
The bag’s size is in between a 2l cross-body bag and a full sized messenger bag, making it the ideal size to carry essential items. A secondary piece of fabric is tethered to the bottom of the bag to add support when full and double As a spot to loop a jacket through. Additionally multiple attachment points are located down the sides for attaching keys, id’s, or whatever else needs to be readily accessible.
Technical drawings demonstrate how the iPad will fit in the bag. In the top view various pockets are shown for specific uses. There are two zippered seconds, an exterior pocket and an iPad sleeve, and a drawstring closure on top to quickly close the bag and allow for larger items, like a water bottle, to fit in the bag.
Material choices were determined by looking to the inspirations and uses of the bag. Quick trips need lightweight materials that don’t slow you down. With this in mind, Ripstop nylon is ideal as it is a durable, lightweight, and water resistant material that is relatively inexpensive. Reinforced nylon webbing is strong and able to withstand heavy loads. Micro cord is used for zipper pulls and attaching the reinforcement piece.
